A vintage IKEA Krabb wavy mirror steadily holds my reflection. Thirty-one years old and I can proudly admit that everything from my organs, bones and skin is intact. Aging with grace. Gaining knowledge and applying wisdom. Writing affirmations and receiving correction. Counting my blessings and choosing the right battles. Avoiding pitfalls and building bridges. The Lord has preserved me for such a time and hour as this. I have no shame in drawing a sword and picking up a shield for the Kingdom of God.

Capitol Hill has been looking like the WWE these days. U.S. Politics resembles Rome. "Socialists" to the left and a "king" to the right I have decided to bet my money on myself and to place my faith in God. If there was a time for an independent to rise up and take the political world by storm it should be now. As I sit back with a cup of coffee watching both political parties eat themselves alive, I am writing out a better world for those who are not yet born. A politician is no more than a person that sells promises that he or she cannot keep. African Americans have no business whatsoever putting their energy towards this country's two-party system. Both parties are two wings of the same bird. Both sides are owned by the same handler(s).

Honoring my ancestors is all that matters to me at the moment. Politically, it is President Barrack Obama, Shirely Chisholm and Reverend Jesse Jackson. Civically, it is Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Malcolm X and Bayard Rustin. In the world of literature, it is James Baldwin, Octavia E. Butler and Ta-Nehisi Coates. Through everything that I do whether it be washing dishes, taking out the trash or doing good by people my maternal grandmother Wilhemina comes to mind. When it comes to physicality, I am a mirroring image of my maternal grandfather Herbert Montgomery. A mixture of intellect, hard work, charisma and charm I stand on the shoulders of giants.

Television series such as The Bear and Shogun are current inspirations for me. Carmen "Carmy" Berzatto has taught me how to work and thrive through chaos and discomfort. Lord Yoshi Toranaga has taught me how to approach every battle with a strategy and a plan. I aspire to tell stories about real life men, women, boys and girls. Another aspiration of mine is to dig deeper into the graphic novel genre. My form of writing is visual and paints avid pictures. People of all ethnicities and backgrounds are allowed to read my work. With every page I published I aim to reach people who are members of the global community which includes those who are of the African diaspora.

Self-discovery takes place for me for as long God gives me breath. Duality has been a personal battle that I have been fighting for as long as I can remember. I have come to grips with my ability to carry two identities at once. Malcolm the student and Malcolm the son/big brother were two different people. Malcolm the writer/intellectual and Malcolm the teacher/minister are two different people. Throughout my life I have been good at allowing people in my space to know just enough about me. Who I really am behind all of my talents, gifts and abilities the world may never know. How did I become like this? One may point to abandonment by some family members. Some may point to me being a social outcast for a portion of my developmental years. Others may find faults in my ways. But I take it all in stride.

I will not apologize for being who I am as a man, intellectual, writer and advocate. Whoever has a problem with me has a problem with God. My Father who sits on His throne in Heaven has made me perfect and without one mistake. It is through the blood of Jesus Christ that I am forgiven from my past sins and transgressions. The Holy Spirit comforts and guides me as the trails, tribulations and challenges of this world are laid before me. In my past I was in my discovery phase. In my present I have given my heart, mind and soul to the Lord. The future is none of my concern and is not for me to even guess. God's promises and plans He has for me is what I stand on.
